Languages in Javea - Welcome to Javea
Spanish, Valencian and All Things European!
Whilst
first time visitors expect to encounter the abundance of Spanish, they
also usually expect everyone to speak English. What they suprises them
is that every road sign has two names for the same place! This is
because the regional dialect is Valencian. For example, Javea in
Valencian is 'Xabia'. British tourists also usually expect everyone to
speak English. However, the vast majority of Spanish in Javea may speak
a few words, but they could hardly be described as fluent.
Many
of the waiting staff in the port restaurants and areanal restaurants in
Javea are are from South America, Northern Europe and Eastern Europe,
making for some interesting variations in the pronounciation of the
English Language!
Javea also enjoys a good mix of expats
from the Netherlands, Scandinavia and Germany, which again adds to the
cultural mix. Javea hasn't yet experienced the surge in Northern
African population, as has the Costa del Sol, nor the influx of Russian
migrant workers that has increased in other parts of the Costa Blanca.
